Boycotting Israeli Products
Why would you boycott Israel when the Palestinians themselves don’t?
Even Mahmoud Abbas, speaking in South Africa at the funeral of Nelson Mandela, said, "No, we do not support the boycott of Israel.” --
The Star newspaper reported on 11 December 2013.
Conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is a sure headline grabber. But, the reality on the ground is quite different.
Israel and the Palestinians cooperate in a whole host of areas including:
Of course, if you boycott Israel, you also damage these projects.
If you want to be consistent about it and boycott everything that comes from Israel, here are some of the things that should be on your list, because they were all developed in Israel:
In addition, the cell phone was developed in Israel by Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel. Most of the Windows NT operating system was developed by Microsoft-Israel. The Pentium MMX chip was designed in Israel at Intel, and voice mail technology was developed in Israel as well.
Finally, as this comment indicates, the BDS movement harms Arabs as well as Jews:
"I had access to a particular consumer product which is of exceptional quality at a low price, which I offered to a Swedish distributor who has a distribution network for this sort of product throughout Europe. The distributor really wanted the product, but after research, concluded that the "made in Israel" label made it unsalable in Europe. The fact that the manufacturer was an Israeli Arab was not relevant."
And, ironically, it hurts Palestinians too.
People should be encouraged to debate issues of national and international importance in an open and honest way.
But boycotts do not unite, they divide.
BDS fails to recognize that the path to peace is paved with diplomacy, discussion and cooperation, not isolation or continued conflict. Solutions come from engagement, not silence.
Doesn't it make more sense to create projects that benefit both the Israelis and the Palestinians?
You might also want to create a Buycott of Israeli products through groups such as I Shop for Israel.
